A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words!

I have been captivated by this photo.   It is often said that a picture is worth  a 1,000 words and that is exactly how I feel.   I first saw this photo a few months ago and and I recently contacted Joni to see if I could use it for a blog post, not sure what topic I would attach to it.  She was happy to allow me to use it.  “It was taken in Hugo Colorado”, Jonie explained.  “I went there for my father’s funeral.  We decided to visit the home he grew up in, which is now abandoned. The yard was full of deer and turkey and they refused to leave. It was the only house in the neighborhood that they were on. The sunlight was beautiful there.  My siblings and I found it as a comforting sign.  My father was an avid outdoorsman and the fact that even as we walked around, the animals didn’t run away – made us feel comfort somehow”. When Joni told me the story behind the photo, I knew there was a reason why this photo was calling to me.  It made me think about what it means to me to be a hunter.  Being an avid outdoorsman is so much more than hunting.  It is the bond that we all share of caring and loving these beautiful animals.  That is the message I want to talk about today.  Some non-hunters cannot wrap their minds around the fact that something so beautiful is hunted.  The juxtaposition of being a hunter and being a conservationist may be hard for some to understand.   Simply put, we hunt to enjoy the harvest, but we give back to protect and preserve the animals. There are many exceptional organizations that are dedicated to conservation and the two that I hope to become more involved with this year are the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) . “To put back more than we take”,  the camp motto of Wildlife Action Club (WLA),  another very worthwhile organization,  describes the efforts that hunters and outdoorsman strive to do. Members and volunteers from these organizations participate in so many worthwhile projects that directly benefit turkey and deer populations all over the country.  They do this by improving habitats for the wildlife to flourish.  An example that many can relate to is overpopulation of turkeys and deer in urban areas.  These animals become dependent, as well as a nuisance,  and lose their fear of man resulting in their inability to survive in the wild.  Through strategic programs, education, funding, and participation of so many members, great progress...

C. Mo’s Kids… Imagine if you Could not Hunt or Fish

We, as lovers of the outdoors, know the deep passion we feel about hunting and fishing.  Ok, stop what you are doing and imagine what it would feel like if you could not hunt or fish.   Hurts bad, right? Ok, now imagine a young person being able to shoot a gun,  hunt, or fish  for the first time ever!  That is what C. Mo’s Kids is all about.  These handi-abled kids have a place they can go to shoot, hunt, and participate in amazing outdoor experiences. The mission behind this important organization is to enrich the lives of special needs children by providing life-changing outdoor experiences that are exciting, fun and empowering, in a safe and accommodating environment. The desire is to foster the development of self-confidence and self-reliance through the provision of outdoor adventures including hunting, fishing and camping’. How did this all start, you ask?  C. MO Bucks met a young man a couple of years ago that could talk of nothing but his desire to go hunting. This young man had cerebral palsy and even though his father was a hunter the logistics of getting this child into a blind and providing the specialized equipment needed was out of reach for his family. C. MO arranged a hog hunt and the look on this boy’s face when he took his first hog made all the extra effort worth while. C. MO’S KIDS was born! So, what can you do to help? Just visit the website: C.Mo’sKids where you can sign up to volunteer, donate,  start a new Chapter, or sponsor a child for this special program. It will make your heart feel so good to help a child enjoy what we take for granted everyday …enjoying all that the outdoors has to offer. I know… it just made my heart feel that way to donate to this wonderful organization! The Matthew Bellamy Project… A Tragedy leads to this Amazing Cause

Gun Safety is above all, the most important aspect of owning a gun, especially when it comes to protecting our children. I would love to share this cause with my fellow gun owners. This very worthwhile project promotes gun safety through education and offers many other events to bring the Bellamy Family’s message of gun accident prevention  to as many people as possible. Please take a minute to visit this web site and please get involved.   TheMatthewBellamyProject (MBP) is a gun safety organization committed to preventing unintentional firearm deaths by providing free gun locks and firearm safety classes. Our Mission Our family owns guns and respects the rights of others to do so. However, in spite of the fact that we keep our guns locked in a safe where children cannot access them, we lost a child due to an unsecured gun. Out of our heartache, we share our story: Encouraging adults to be responsible for the proper unloading and storage of firearms. Encouraging adults to educate children about gun safety and the proper handling of firearms. Urging parents to ask: “Are there unsecured firearms where my children play”? A Place Where you want your Kids to go Wild!!!

Wildlife Action Adventure Camps is just that place. My husband and I were lucky enough to take a tour of the Headquarters in Mullins, SC and I can tell you I wished I was a child again!  A distinctive Pioneer theme dominates the authentic grounds and you feel like you are back in time!   We were so impressed, we decided to become sponsors so that some deserving youngsters could enjoy a week at this amazing camp.  The rustic campground has everything a young person could dream of -all centered around the conservation and preservation of the beautiful outdoor environment and all that it has to offer.  Here is a glimpse of what the campers will experience at WLA: Fishing, swimming, and canoeing are favorites of many of the campers whom are referred to as Pioneers! But there is so much more.  This camp emphasizes outdoor eduction and every activity promotes awareness about the wildlife habitat and educating campers on the stewardship of the good earth.                                                          Camp would not be camp if there were not opportunities to learn about snakes!!  Horseback riding,  archery, gun safety, and skeet shooting (age appropriate) are all apart of the outdoor experience led by skilled and experienced instructors.  This camp is all about passing on to the next generation the 5 point laws for WLA:  education, values of preservation, conservation, sportsmanship, and fellowship.     I met campers who live for this camp each year and we have also met some that became counselors.  Learning about the delicate balance of nature through exploring the woods,  and planting trees and gardens and giving thanks for the natural resources we have.   Day camps are available for ages 6-11 starting in June and Overnight camps for ages 9-14 are available in July.  Please check out Wildlife Action Camp and get your pioneer away from their computer and off the couch and go this amazing camp . “Putting back more than we take!”    Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Like this:Like...
